FISE World Edmonton
September 20 2016 // William Hawrelak Park, Edmonton, Alberta Canada
FISE World Edmonton came into William Hawrelak Park and turned it into a playground for the most talented, and tight knit group of athletes this planet has to offer.
The events include Mountain Bike Slopestyle, Skateboard Freestyle Park, BMX Freestyle Park, and BMX Flatland. The athletes all have their own style, and personality that comes out in the competition. And despite the individualistic nature of a sponsor driven sport, after spending but a few days photographing them, one thing is obvious—community.
Yes, FISE World is a competition. There are points. There is prize money. But ultimately, the athletes are all out there encouraging each other to nail that trick. Supporting each other after every run. Fist bumps. High fives. And hugs.
After every single run.
It’s other riders reaching out when someone gets too close to the edge of the stage. They walk through Save-On on 109th St.—BMX bikes in hand upright rolling on the back tire—as a pack. A group that eats, sleeps, and breathes together. Moves, operates, and entertains as one.
Professionals every step of the way, it was an honour to work with every single athlete. Thank-you for everything, and enjoy some of my favourite photos broken up by discipline.
