2017 Jasper Canadian Rockies Half Marathon
April 13 2017 // Jasper, AB
Mountains, trees, and runners…yes please! I was fortunate to have the chance to rip out to cover the 2017 Jasper Canadian Rockies Half Marathon to kick off the 2017 race season.
A special thanks to Brendan and Cassandra for letting me hitch a ride with my bike and gear to Jasper to shake some rust off and get shots of what turned out to be a very tightly packed Edmonton run contingent. The weather was ideal with just enough cool, but a bit of sun at the end to let us know summer is on its way.
Having as many runners as we had, all with a similar pace also allowed me to get a bunch of photos of everyone. We had representatives from River City Runners, November Project, Run Collective, Fast Trax, East Van Run Crew, Running Room AC, and I saw some Wild Rose Runners out there too, but I didn’t capture any of them I don’t think.
Sadly I racked out on an unmarked course obstacle after the Edith Lake loop. I spent 10 minutes in the medic trailer and wasn’t able to catch the runners. I was saving the back half of the race for some environment shots from a distance having mentally noted spots to shoot from on the way out.
So for the most part, these are some nice tight shots of smiling, and not so much smiling, runners. All things considered, it was still a great day. I mean, how can race day not be! Thanks everyone for the lovely day, and letting me get my sea legs back chasing runners with all my gear. Great run everyone, and what a way to kick off the race season ahead!
Enjoy the photos!
This is the only time I’ll post an out of focus shot. Somehow, while flying through the air after hitting an unmarked obstacle on the course heading into this aid station, my camera gets a frame fired off capturing one volunteers reaction to what is happening. The rest of the eyes are seeing me launch into the air, but it still hasn’t registered what is going on.
Enjoy this moment, a mere millisecond before I hit the ground and have a camera gear yard sale. I came away with some minor bumps and scrapes with the most serious being on my non-shooting elbow. I’m fortunate, and happy to have taken one for the “team”, because if a runner hit that sign post holder, the results could have been MUCH worse. Y’all owe me one ;)
